Winner, South Dakota

Winner is a city in Tripp County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,897 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tripp County.[7] Winner also serves as the administrative center of neighboring Todd County, which does not have its own county seat.[8] The nearest airport is Winner Regional Airport.

Winner, located in the south central part of the state, features a climate type (Köppen Dfa) often described as a hot summer humid continental climate. Winters average below the −3 °C (26.6 °F) persistent snow line isotherm, and Summers average above 22 °C (72 °F) Köppen hot summer isotherm. The climate features nearly even four seasons, typical of its classification. The all-time high temperature is 112 °F (44 °C), set in 2003 and 1965, and the all-time low temperature is −29 °F (−34 °C), set in 1989.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,897 people, 1,328 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,316.8 inhabitants per square mile (508.4/km2). There were 1,547 housing units at an average density of 703.2 per square mile (271.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 82.1% White, 0.2% African American, 14.0% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

Witten, South Dakota

Wolsey, South Dakota

The first settlement at Wolsey was made in 1882.[7] A post office has been in operation in Wolsey since 1883, the same year the town was platted.[8] The township was organized the following year, in 1884. The town of Wolsey was named for Thomas Wolsey, an English cardinal.[9]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.31 square miles (5.98 km2), of which, 2.27 square miles (5.88 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[2]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 376 people, 165 households, and 106 families residing in the town. The population density was 165.6 inhabitants per square mile (63.9/km2). There were 194 housing units at an average density of 85.5 per square mile (33.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 99.2% White, 0.3% Asian, and 0.5% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

Whitewood, South Dakota

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 927 people, 374 households, and 232 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,448.4 inhabitants per square mile (559.2/km2). There were 392 housing units at an average density of 612.5 per square mile (236.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.9% White, 0.8% African American, 3.7% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

There were 374 households of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.0% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.05.

The median age in the city was 38.8 years. 26.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.7% were from 25 to 44; 28.8% were from 45 to 64; and 14.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.6% male and 49.4% female.

Woonsocket, South Dakota

Woonsocket was developed in 1883 as a railroad town because of its location at the junction on the Chicago, Milwaukee and Saint Paul Railroad.[8] C.H. Prior, the superintendent of the railroad, named the town Woonsocket after his home town of Woonsocket, Rhode Island.[9][10] The town was incorporated in 1888.[11]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 655 people, 287 households, and 168 families residing in the city. The population density was 839.7 inhabitants per square mile (324.2/km2). There were 318 housing units at an average density of 407.7 per square mile (157.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.3% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.

There were 287 households of which 24.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.5% were non-families. 37.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.79.

£sd (pronounced /ɛlɛsˈdiː/ ell-ess-dee and occasionally written Lsd) is the popular name for the pre-decimal currencies once common throughout Europe, especially in the British Isles and hence in several countries of the British Empire and subsequently the Commonwealth. The abbreviation originates from the Latin currency denominations librae, solidi, and denarii.[1] In the United Kingdom, which was one of the last to abandon the system, these were referred to as pounds, shillings, and pence (pence being the plural of penny).

This system originated in the classical Roman Empire. It was re-introduced into Western Europe by Charlemagne, and was the standard for many centuries across the continent. In Britain, it was King Offa of Mercia who adopted the Frankish silver standard of librae, solidi and denarii in the late 8th century,[2] and the system was used in much of the British Commonwealth until the 1960s and 1970s, with Nigeria being the last to abandon it with the introduction of the naira on 1 January 1973.

Under this system, there were 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings, or 240 pence, in a pound. The penny was subdivided into 4 farthings until 31 December 1960, when they ceased to be legal tender in the UK, and until 31 July 1969 there were also halfpennies ("ha'pennies") in circulation. The advantage of such a system was its use in mental arithmetic, as it afforded many factors and hence fractions of a pound such as tenths, eighths, sixths and even sevenths and ninths if the guinea (worth 21 shillings) was used. When dealing with items in dozens, multiplication and division are straightforward; for example, if a dozen eggs cost four shillings, then each egg was priced at fourpence.

Yankton, South Dakota

Yankton is a city in, and the county seat of, Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 14,454 at the 2010 census. Yankton is the principal city of the Yankton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the entirety of Yankton County, and which had an estimated population of 22,662 as of July 1, 2017. Yankton was the first capital of Dakota Territory. It is named for the Yankton tribe of Nakota (Sioux) Native Americans; Yankton is derived from the Nakota word I-hank-ton-wan ("the end village").[9]

Yankton is located on the Missouri River just downstream of the Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake and just upstream of the confluence with the James River. The United States National Park Service's headquarters for the Missouri National Recreational River are located in the city. The Human Services Center was established as a psychiatric hospital in 1882 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yankton is commonly referred to as the "River City",[10] due to its proximity to the Missouri River and the importance that the river played in the city's settlement and development. Yankton has also earned the nickname, "Mother City of the Dakotas", due to the early important role it played in the creation and development of the Dakota Territory, which later became the 39th and 40th U.S. states of North and South Dakota.[11]

The racial makeup of the city was 92.7% White, 0.2% African American, 1.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.5% Pacific Islander, and 4.6% from two or more races. There were 270 households of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.8% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.3% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.78.

The median age in the city was 48.2 years. 23.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.3% were from 25 to 44; 30.5% were from 45 to 64; and 22.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.1% male and 48.9% female.

Pollock, South Dakota

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 241 people, 136 households, and 62 families residing in the town. The population density was 753.1 inhabitants per square mile (290.8/km2). There were 203 housing units at an average density of 634.4 per square mile (244.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.9% White, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.

There were 136 households of which 14.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% were married couples living together, 3.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 54.4% were non-families. 51.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 30.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.77 and the average family size was 2.58.

The median age in the town was 52.9 years. 14.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 16.1% were from 25 to 44; 31.9% were from 45 to 64; and 32.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Sioux Falls (/ˌsuː ˈfɔːlz/) (Lakota: Íŋyaŋ Okábleča Otȟúŋwahe;[7] "Stone Shatter City") is the most populous city in the U.S. state of South Dakota and the 143rd-most populous city in the United States. It is the county seat of Minnehaha County[8] and also extends into Lincoln County to the south. It is the 47th-fastest-growing city in the United States[9] and the fastest-growing metro area in South Dakota, with a population increase of 22% between 2000 and 2010.[10]

As of 2018, Sioux Falls had an estimated population of 183,200.[11] The metropolitan population of 259,094 accounts for 29% of South Dakota's population. It is also the primary city of the Sioux Falls-Sioux City Designated Market Area (DMA), a larger media market region that covers parts of four states and has a population of 1,043,450.[12] Chartered in 1856 on the banks of the Big Sioux River, the city is situated in the rolling hills at the junction of Interstate 90 and Interstate 29.

The history of Sioux Falls revolves around the cascades of the Big Sioux River. The falls were created about 14,000 years ago during the last ice age. The lure of the falls has been a powerful influence. Ho-Chunk, Ioway, Otoe, Missouri, Omaha (and Ponca at the time), Quapaw, Kansa, Osage, Arikira, Dakota, and Cheyenne people inhabited and settled the region previous to Europeans and European descendants. Numerous burial mounds still exist on the high bluffs near the river and are spread throughout the general vicinity. Indigenous people maintained an agricultural society with fortified villages, and the later arrivals rebuilt on many of the same sites that were previously settled. Lakota populate urban and reservation communities in the contemporary state and many Lakota, Dakota, and numerous other Indigenous Americans reside in Sioux Falls today.[13]
